I rode with Pete on many occasions over the time from when he came back a few years ago after he retired. During this time he was both a good friend as well as a wise counsel, I learned a lot as we talked about riding in the late fifties and early sixties.
The last time we rode together was just before Christmas and the recent lockdown, if it hadn't been for the Covid restrictions we would have been riding together on many days in 2021. Rest in peace my good friend.

It was an honour to have cycled with you Peter, even though I could not keep up with you on the hills. Rest in peace.

I'd guess that Pete resumed riding with Clifton C.C. about the same time as I joined the Club. I was amazed to learn of his cycling achievements, from others, of course, as Pete was so unassuming and modest that he wouldn't have said anything himself. Over the next 10 years or so, I enjoyed his company on any ride we undertook together and marvelled at how classy he still looked on a bike. Never one for idle chit-chat, he was, nevertheless, a master at saying just what needed to be said and he did tell me on numerous occasions that he couldn't understand a word I said. Still expect to see him on the airfield road at Acaster as our paths regularly crossed on lunchtime rides during lockdown. Usually just an "Alright Pete!" -> "Alright Craig!" wave and nod of the head. Wish we'd stopped and chatted, just one more time.

Rode against Pete in Newcastle in 67/68, Olympic selection event and always followed his career. A sad loss.

I have cycled with 'Smithy' as a Wednesday Wheeler. He was a great cyclist with a great sense of humour and we got on well. He will be sadly missed.
