Our thoughts are with Verns' wife , children and family.
Dear Vern: First of all, Thank you. Unfortunately I did not have the pleasure of meeting you but we are fortunate to enjoy the fruits of your labour by being a small part of the Sussex cycling family.
As a result of your life's work and dedication, many children, adults and families benefits from being part a wonderful community.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend your funeral as our son is racing in Assen at present, again somewhere we not be if we were not part of Preston Park Youth Cycling Club and Sussex Cycling Racing League founded by you and friends.
Creating memories that will be with us for a life time.
We will raise a toast to you and once again Thank you.
The Au family

The Sussex Cycle Racing League have written its own obituary on its website which we reproduce here.
It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of our President Vern (Vernal) McClelland. Vern leaves behind his wife Andrea and four children Becky, Sean, Katherine and Neil. Vern played an important role in Sussex track cycling and indeed took part in officiating as a Commissaire at a national level in both road and track. Vern showed a commitment to local cycle sport and, although ill for a number of years, was still commissairing up until last season.
Racing SCRL track league in the 1980s and 1990s he combined this with being our race Promoter during much of that period. He was for many seasons our most prolific commissaire and coached at Preston Park Youth Cycle Club at its outset.
Vern was not alone in being the only contributor in his family to the SCRL and further afield; wife Andrea ran a renown tea room from beside the final banking, where many spectators spent their entire evening drinking tea, eating Andrea's home bakes and watching the racing. Son Neil was an original member of PPYCC and he, alongside his siblings Sean and Katherine, raced SCRL track league over many seasons. Katherine is currently working for British Cycling in Manchester whilst Andrea, Sean and Neil pleasingly visited us at track league last Wednesday 17th July.

Vern, we raced together, officiated together, holidayed with our families together and coached Preston Park Youth Cycling Club together. I was always lifted when you were Com at Preston Park; your wisdom, knowledge, manner and ability to make firm and friendly decisions, when riders and supporters got over involved, was a great lesson in how to officiate for the benefit of the sport and the participants. There are no more togethers but you will remain an important part of my, and my families, journey in cycling, which is to say our journey through life. We are pleased that we can share memories with Andrea, Sean, Katherine and Neil and wish them well on their journeys without you by their side.
